## La Storia

The story of Castello Sforzesco begins in the 14th century, originally constructed as a defensive fortress by Galeazzo II Visconti. Known then as the 'Castello di Porta Giovia,' it was designed to protect Milan and serve as a ducal residence. However, its true transformation into a symbol of power and art began with the Sforza dynasty.

Francesco Sforza, Duke of Milan, rebuilt and expanded the castle significantly in the 15th century. He enlisted some of the greatest artists and engineers of the time, including Filippo Brunelleschi and Leonardo da Vinci, to enhance its defenses and embellish its interiors. Leonardo, in particular, left his mark, designing fortifications and working in the Sala delle Asse.

Over the centuries, the castle endured numerous sieges and occupations by various foreign powers, reflecting Milan's turbulent history under French, Spanish, and Austrian rule. Each period left its imprint, from architectural modifications to the plunder of its treasures. By the 19th century, it was largely in disrepair and even considered for demolition.

A major restoration effort in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, led by Luca Beltrami, saved the castle and transformed it into a public cultural institution. This initiative saw the reconstruction of the Torre Filarete and the establishment of the civic museums, making its vast collections accessible to all.

Today, Castello Sforzesco stands as a testament to Milan's resilience and artistic legacy. It continues to inspire and educate, preserving a rich tapestry of history, art, and craft, making it a pivotal site for understanding the evolution of Lombardy and beyond.
